The Lead Microbiologist at the Department of Health and Human Services will play a crucial role in public health by leading research studies and ensuring the integration of the organization's strategic goals into team operations. This position involves coaching team members, managing workloads, and developing new methods for data collection and analysis, all aimed at enhancing public health initiatives.

  • Ensure the organization's strategic plan, mission, vision, and values are communicated to the team and integrated into strategies, goals, objectives, and work products.
  • Coach the team in selecting and applying appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques.
  • Lead the team in identifying, distributing, and balancing workload and tasks among employees according to established workflow and skill levels.
  • Make adjustments to accomplish workload in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Serve as a coach, facilitator, and negotiator in coordinating team initiatives and consensus-building activities.
  • Plan, prioritize, initiate, design, conduct, coordinate, direct, and lead basic and applied research studies.
  • Develop new methods for collecting, analyzing, organizing, and recording experimental data appropriate for publication and future reference.
  • Recreate experiments, describing protocols, methods, and procedures used, along with summaries of data obtained and any problems encountered.
  • A degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science with at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and related subjects, and 20 semester hours in physical and chemical sciences.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, including leading laboratory staff in research studies and developing laboratory safety and quality controls.
  • Experience in public health research and initiatives.
  • Familiarity with regulatory guidelines for clinical testing.
