About The Position

Under administrative direction, the Lead CLS is responsible for laboratory operations and personnel performing testing. Serves as lead technologist for assigned hospital/ sections of the laboratory and performs related administrative duties, provides technical oversight to assure a high quality of laboratory testing for patient care. Performs analysis in microbiology according to expected performance standards and has broad decision-making authority, and independence.

Requirements

  • B.S. or equivalent in Medical Technology or related clinical field.
  • Valid state Clinical Lab Scientist license as required by the state.
  • Current BLS is preferred.
  • 2-3 years experience in clinical laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as lead worker, supervises, directs, plans, develops, implements, evaluates, and oversees the execution of daily operations of assigned area/laboratory.
  • Performs analyses in Microbiology according to expected performance standards.
  • Calibrates instruments; performs and documents preventative and corrective maintenance on instruments and equipment; performs advanced troubleshooting on instruments and methods.
  • Troubleshoots technical and analytical problems including specimen collection problems.
  • Determines cause and provides direction to staff on resolution of problems in accordance with guidelines and procedures.
  • Interacts with vendors to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Monitors and reviews quality control data and quality assurance information to detect shifts, trends, or problems with accuracy and reliability of laboratory testing.
  • Assists in documentation and investigation of quality occurrences.
  • Initiates corrective actions for quality control and other quality and/or service problems.
  • Verifies specimen and patient information, determines internal or external testing of specimen and enters data.
  • Assists the laboratory manager in compliance with a variety of regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Assists in the preparation of the laboratory for inspections.
  • Evaluates API results as required.
  • Responsible for the development of staff schedules and work assignments for assigned areas; modifies staff assignments as needed.
  • Responsible for the inventory management process in the assigned laboratory area.
  • Orders supplies and monitors expenditures.
  • Provides input for budget.
  • Prepares and sends specimens to reference laboratories.
  • Monitors QA and CLIA requirements, writes policies and procedures.
  • Provides input for interviewing/hiring/evaluating employees.
  • Provides orientation and training to new employees in the assigned laboratory sections.
  • Participates in the organization and implementation of staff in-service educations.
  • Facilitates communication on a daily basis.
  • Ensures that staff are aware of all pertinent departmental information.
  • Serves as a liaison between laboratory and hospital administration.
  • Serves as a resource for nurses and physicians.
  • Meets with the lab service goals as scheduled or reports problems to the lab director.
