About The Position

SGS is looking for a Lead Mechanical Inspector near Union City, Indiana for a contract expected to last ~8 months or until the facility is in service. The Lead Mechanical Inspector will oversee mechanical inspection activities for a large industrial construction project. This role is responsible for ensuring mechanical systems are installed in compliance with approved drawings, specifications, codes, and safety requirements, while providing day‑to‑day inspection leadership on site.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 10–15 years of mechanical inspection experience in large-scale industrial construction environments
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification (or equivalent safety training)
  • Demonstrated experience in a Lead or Senior Mechanical Inspector role, providing day-to-day inspection leadership and coordinating inspection activities on site
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and support mechanical inspectors, while interfacing effectively with contractors, construction management, and quality teams
  • Extensive experience inspecting process piping, pressure systems, pressure vessels, and industrial mechanical equipment
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical codes and standards, including ASME B31, ASME Section VIII, and applicable API codes
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, piping isometrics, fabrication drawings, and project specifications
  • Strong leadership, documentation, and communication skills with the ability to make sound field decisions
  • The candidate will need their own vehicle to get to site.

Nice To Haves

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification – ideal
  • API 510 (Pressure Vessel Inspector) certification – ideal
  • API 570 (Piping Inspector) certification – nice to have, given limited pressure vessel scope on site

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate all mechanical inspection activities during construction
  • Oversee mechanical inspectors and interface with contractors and construction management
  • Verify installation of piping, pressure vessels, mechanical equipment, and associated systems
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes (ASME, API), project specifications, and safety standards
  • Review inspection and test plans, welding documentation, and material certifications
  • Witness mechanical and pressure testing, mechanical completion, and pre‑commissioning activities
  • Track non‑conformances, punch lists, and corrective actions through close-out
  • Maintain accurate inspection reports and quality documentation
