About The Position

The Lead Mechanic is responsible for overseeing day-to-day repair and maintenance tasks while serving as a working leader within the shop. This role ensures that all equipment and vehicles are maintained to safety and operational standards. The Lead Mechanic provides technical guidance to other technicians, coordinates workflow, and ensures timely completion of repairs to minimize downtime and maintain fleet readiness.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in diesel mechanics or heavy-duty truck/trailer repair.
  • Prior leadership or lead technician experience is preferred.
  • Strong mechanical and diagnostic skills across various systems (brakes, engines, electrical, hydraulics, etc.).
  • Familiarity with maintenance software and electronic work order systems.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic reports.
  • Effective communication and leadership abilities.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior leadership or lead technician experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance on trucks, trailers, and equipment.
  • Serves as the go-to technical expert for complex repairs and troubleshooting.
  • Assists with scheduling and assigning repair work to other mechanics based on priority and skill level.
  • Reviews completed repairs for accuracy and compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Maintains proper documentation of repairs, parts used, and service logs in maintenance software.
  • Acts as a lead point of contact for the technician team, providing guidance and support.
  • Coordinates with the Shop Manager to prioritize work orders and monitor shop productivity.
  • Assists in training new mechanics and mentoring junior technicians.
  • Enforces shop safety practices and ensures proper use of tools and PPE.
  • Monitors parts inventory and assists with ordering necessary supplies.
  • Ensures tools and equipment are maintained and in good working condition.
  • Conducts pre- and post-shift inspections of shop equipment and vehicles.
  • Ensures all repairs meet DOT, OSHA, and company safety standards.
  • Supports internal audits and safety checks as needed.
  • Participates in safety meetings and reinforces a safety-first culture within the shop.
