The Lead Level Designer at Gearbox Software will play a crucial role in the development of a first-person shooter game using Unreal Engine 5. This position involves leading a team of level designers, overseeing the creation and direction of gameplay environments, and ensuring cohesive collaboration with other departments such as Level Art, Mission Design, and Lighting Art. The role emphasizes both management and hands-on level creation, contributing to the overall narrative and gameplay experience.

  • Work with the level design team to develop focused gameplay environments that showcase player and enemy combat and abilities.
  • Manage a group of level designers, providing direction, feedback, and coaching to help them progress in their craft.
  • Coordinate the needs of the Level Design team with the Level Art, Mission Design, and Lighting Art teams to ensure well-built levels.
  • Work with department production to track project goals and provide regular updates to project leadership about the team's progress.
  • Promote the project through demos, events, live streams, press interviews, and more when the project is ready for release.
  • Multiple shipped AAA games in a Level Design role, preferably in a leadership role.
  • Portfolio or demo reel showcasing your work.
  • Solid understanding of modern level/game design practices.
  • Ability to communicate with all facets of the team to determine and act upon design needs.
  • Ability to evaluate progress on a game level and determine what is needed to bring the level to completion.
  • Ability to work in the US or Quebec, either near our Frisco, Quebec City, or Montreal offices, or remotely at an agreed upon location.
  • Unreal Engine 4/5 experience.
  • Shipped AAA Level Design experience.
  • College Graduate.
