About The Position

Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Research and with work lead direction from the Department Chair of Chemistry, the Lead Instructional Support Technician provides advanced technical and operational support to the Chemistry Department. The incumbent independently coordinates the activities of the Main and Satellite Chemistry Stockrooms, supervises three Instructional Support Technicians, and ensures that all instructional laboratories and stockrooms operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with university, county, state, and federal regulations. Key Responsibilities Oversee daily operations of the Main and Satellite Chemistry Stockrooms Maintain chemical and compressed gas inventories using the RSS online system Purchase, receive, and distribute chemicals, gases, and lab supplies in accordance with safety and MAQ requirements Prepare and standardize chemical reagents and solutions for instructional laboratories Coordinate laboratory schedules and ensure appropriate staffing and coverage Manage chemical waste collection, labeling, and removal in compliance with Environmental, Health, and Safety and safety standards Maintain housekeeping and safety compliance in all Chemistry laboratories, stockrooms, and service centers Serve as a member of the Department Safety Committee and the Building Emergency Team Support faculty and students in laboratory instruction and operations

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods related to performing support services
  • Knowledge of the principles, information, methods and techniques related to discipline to which assigned
  • Knowledge of the materials, equipment and supplies related to the assigned curriculum, their characteristics, and uses
  • Ability to operate and do minor repairs of technical and scientific equipment
  • Ability to coordinate support service to meet a comprehensive variety of needs
  • Ability to develop off-campus resources related to the discipline for obtaining materials or equipment
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
  • Working knowledge of software applications: RSS, word processing, spreadsheet, and database management
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects effectively and independently
  • Strong oral communication skills. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • Familiarity with the use of scientific equipment, instrumentation, and techniques of both qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis
  • Ability to properly prepare chemical reagents and produce uniformly standardized solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to segregate chemicals and hazardous chemical waste into specific hazard classes
  • A thorough knowledge of chemical compatibility is essential
  • Equivalent to four (4) years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned.
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or related fields
  • Three (3) years of experience in Chemistry or related laboratory environment or service center
