Lead HVAC Technician Job Summary Lead HVAC team operations providing technical leadership, system maintenance, and safety compliance for commercial building systems. Supervise technicians while ensuring energy optimization, client satisfaction, and comprehensive system management through team development and project coordination.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent with HVAC/R technical training preferred
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Handling Certification required
  • OSHA 10 or 30-hour safety certification or equivalent
  • Valid HVAC contractor's license where required by jurisdiction
  • 5+ years commercial/industrial HVAC experience with 2+ years supervisory experience
  • Experience with large commercial systems, building automation, and energy management
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals
  • Knowledge of diagnostic equipment, EPA regulations, and OSHA safety standards
  • Strong communication skills with ability to explain technical concepts to stakeholders
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking with root cause analysis capabilities
  • Physical ability to lift 50+ pounds and work in confined spaces, heights, and extreme temperatures
  • Leadership skills including team building, conflict resolution, and customer service orientation

Nice To Haves

  • NATE certification and building automation system certifications (Trane, Johnson Controls, Honeywell)
  • Energy management certifications (CEM, CDSM) and boiler operator license
  • Backflow prevention certification and specialized system training
  • Experience with VRF/VRV systems, industrial refrigeration, and predictive maintenance programs
  • Knowledge of HVAC design software, energy analysis tools, and CMMS systems
  • Background in smart building integration, renewable energy systems, and performance analytics
  • Understanding of ASHRAE standards, electrical controls, and combustion analysis

Responsibilities

  • Supervise installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems including chillers, boilers, air handlers, and building automation systems
  • Diagnose complex system failures, oversee preventive maintenance programs, and manage emergency repairs
  • Analyze BAS and energy management systems for optimization while reviewing HVAC plans and specifications
  • Conduct system commissioning, performance testing, and ensure proper balancing
  • Lead and mentor HVAC technicians while coordinating work orders and prioritizing maintenance tasks
  • Develop Job Safety Analysis, Lockout/Tagout procedures, and manage PPE programs
  • Conduct safety briefings, incident investigations, and technical training programs
  • Monitor work quality, safety compliance, and productivity across HVAC team
  • Interface with clients and property managers providing technical explanations and service issue resolution
  • Collaborate with other trades and participate in construction meetings and trade coordination
  • Maintain detailed project documentation and participate in hiring and crew certification management
