The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) is one of the city’s most important cultural institutions and home to the renowned Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. Our team is dedicated to preserving art, nature, and culture while providing a welcoming environment for visitors from around the world. The Lead Horticultural Attendant is responsible for performing and overseeing a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and care of the Sculpture Garden and NOMA grounds. Duties include weeding, plant care, equipment operation, and irrigation system checks. This supervisory role involves working alongside and guiding the horticultural team. The position also assists with general grounds maintenance, including occasional painting and pressure washing.

Requirements

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in garden maintenance.
  • Minimum of two (2) years in a supervisory role.
  • Knowledge of safe use and application of pesticides and chemicals.
  • Familiarity with standard safety protocols and procedures.
  • Regular use of gardening tools including shovels, rakes, trowels, pruning shears, and loppers.
  • Ability to work in a variety of outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and rain.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or move up to 40 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to walk across and work on irregular or steep terrain.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct the daily tasks of the horticultural team, as assigned by the Sculpture Garden Manager.
  • Perform horticultural tasks such as hand weeding, pruning, mulching, and fertilizing.
  • Operate horticultural equipment safely and appropriately, including but not limited to: weed whacker, blower, hedge trimmer, and chainsaw.
  • Assist with irrigation system maintenance and paver repairs, as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work shed and equipment daily.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of ornamental gardening practices.
  • Adapt to changing work conditions due to weather or scheduled events.
