As a Lead Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will be responsible for overseeing and supervising the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment within our terminal operations. This includes diagnosing and repairing heavy-duty lift equipment in the railyard and maintaining side loaders, hostlers, forklifts, and various terminal support vehicles. In this leadership role, you will guide a team of mechanics, ensuring optimal equipment performance, safety, and operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic or service technician.
  • Proven experience in heavy equipment maintenance and repair, particularly with side loaders, forklifts, and hostlers.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and guide a team of mechanics.
  • Hydraulic systems experience required (pumps, valves, motors, filters, and hoses)
  • Driveline component repair experience (axles, bearings, ring, etc.)
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions
  • Ability to work in a safety focused environment
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage and motivate a team.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs
  • Must have a Valid Driver’s License
  • Must pass a pre-employment background verification, physical and drug screening.
  • Must be able to work 7:00AM-3:30PM Monday-Friday

Nice To Haves

  • Previous crane mechanic experience a plus
  • Previous experience as a crane mechanic.
  • Experience working in railyard or intermodal terminal environments.
  • Familiarity with federal safety regulations related to rail and heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the maintenance team.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair heavy-duty lift equipment, including side loaders (loaded container handlers), hostlers (yard trucks), and forklifts.
  • Prioritize work orders and maintenance schedules in coordination with the Terminal and Regional Maintenance Managers.
  • Provide hands-on mechanical support and serve as the subject matter expert for complex maintenance issues.
  • Train, mentor, and lead team members, promoting best practices in repair techniques and safety protocols.
  • Manage parts inventory and vendor relationships for approved equipment purchases.
  • Complete and maintain accurate documentation for inspections, repairs, and compliance with safety standards.
