About The Position

The Lead Health and Nutrition Coach is a leadership role that supports child care educators in promoting a healthy start for young children. This role ensures that nutrition education, individualized coaching/technical assistance, and program supports are coordinated, effective, and aligned with program regulation and best practices to strengthen healthy child care environments that promote good nutrition and physical activity. In collaboration with the Associate Director of Health and Nutrition, the Lead Coach will oversee key components of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), including provider recruitment/onboarding, training, and compliance support. The role also supports cross-team coordination, including the implementation of the Healthy Apple Program in collaboration with the Healthy Apple Program Lead. The Lead represents the department in community partnerships and stakeholder meetings and helps ensure that health and nutrition initiatives are responsive, equitable, and impactful for the Early Childhood Education (ECE) community.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in Nutrition/Health or related field; or a B.A. degree in a related field.
  • Committed to promoting healthy eating and nutrition security for young children and families, and bring a public health-informed, equity-centered lens to your work.
  • Prior experience with ensuring program compliance and integrity, including interpreting, applying, and supporting implementation of federal program requirements and evidence-based nutrition and physical activity best practices.
  • Able to help develop and refine tools and processes that strengthen program compliance and support both providers and Health and Nutrition Coaches meet federal requirements and contract requirements.
  • Have a continuous improvement mindset and use data and community feedback loops to inform and improve program implementation and support for diverse providers and stakeholders.
  • Must be able to accommodate a flexible schedule; occasional evening and weekend work required.
  • Must have the ability to travel extensively within San Francisco; must have access to a car and valid driver’s license required (Transportation costs for Zipcar, Uber/Lyft are covered directly by the organization).
  • A background check is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in child nutrition programs; knowledge of CACFP is a plus

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Associate Director of Health and Nutrition, conduct compliance reviews of internal processes/recordkeeping and recommend improvements.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director of Health and Nutrition, approve CACFP reimbursement levels for program participants based on eligibility criteria.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director of Health and Nutrition, develop, coordinate, and deliver trainings to support provider success in the CACFP, including the mandatory annual training.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director of Health & Nutrition, create new and send communication templates or send out pre-written reoccurring communication templates to CACFP educators.
  • Recruit, train, and monitor a reduced caseload of Family Child Care Home providers participating in the CACFP under Children’s Council’s sponsorship, conducting a minimum of three (3) site visits per year.
  • Maintain accurate provider records and ensure CACFP program compliance with federal guidance.
  • Remain current on CACFP nutrition guidelines, regulations, and policy updates to ensure ongoing compliance and program integrity.
  • Provide ongoing technical assistance and administrative support to child care educators by assessing site-level needs and support goal development and action-planning to make improvements, per CACFP guidelines and Healthy Apple Program best practices.
  • Represent Children’s Council at local and state meetings, task forces, workshops, and trainings.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners on cross-program initiatives and program outreach and recruitment.
