About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Grounds and Landscape Services, the Lead Groundsworker works side-by-side and oversees the work of up to ten employees engaged in general grounds maintenance work primarily in the area of central campus. The Lead Groundsworker is assigned to areas of the campus grounds, and oversees and assists in more specialized work such as: equipment operation, irrigation repairs, tree trimming and outdoor campus event preparation.

Requirements

  • Ability to oversee and work with a crew of up to twelve grounds employees, as well as smaller or larger crews as needed per activity or project, in the maintenance and improvement of an institutional campus of over 325 acres.
  • Ability to use a computerized maintenance management system to keep records and make accurate reports of work performed and completed.
  • Ability to oversee inventory and supplies.
  • Ability to troubleshoot repair irrigation problems including computerized irrigation control systems.
  • Knowledge of computer applications such as word processing, email, and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to work alternate work week and/or work schedules, as necessary.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse environment.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and maintenance of good driving record.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs maximum
  • Ability to wear appropriate PPE
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and caring for flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees.
  • General knowledge of common plant diseases, pests, and weeds; approved methods and materials used in their control and eradication, horticultural methods and materials; and planting and growing requirements of plants commonly grown in California.
  • Ability to lay out, coordinate, and oversee the work of others; provide training, interpret policies and explain methods and procedures; inspect and evaluate the work of others; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform general gardening and grounds maintenance work.
  • Two years of experience in planting, cultivating and maintaining flowers and shrubs, or in general grounds maintenance work.
  • Some position may require possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in event preparation.
  • Experience performing general repair to hardscaping, asphalt and concrete.
  • Two years of experience acting in a lead capacity for a Grounds Department in an institutional setting.
  • State of California Department of Pesticide Regulation, Qualified Applicator’s Certificate, Category B.
