Under the general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, act as a working Lead. The Lead will assist the Facilities Supervisor in the structural department, assign work daily and follow up on all work requests. The Lead will inspect completed projects and give daily and/or weekly reports to the Facilities Supervisor. The job of Grounds Lead is done for the purpose/s of maintaining attractive grounds area/s and athletic fields for students, staff, and the public to ensure they are safe, comfortable, and in good working order; applying required herbicides; ensuring availability of required equipment; protecting against erosion; maintaining grounds for assemblies and/or recreation al activities; and leading other employees ensuring a ssignments are completed in a safe, proper, and timely manner. This job reports to the Facilities Supervisor

Requirements

  • SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in grounds maintenance including tractors, weed whacker, mowers, blowers, hand & power tools, etc.; and adhering to safety practices.
  • KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basi c math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. S pecific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job which includes: safety practices and procedures; methods, practices, tools and materials used in landscape maintenance and related repairs; fertilization techniques, weed control, lawn care, pruning and landscape design; use of SDS’s.
  • ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; collate data; use job-related equipment safely. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined and similar processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines and sometimes independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; basic mechanical aptitudes; adhering to safety practices; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working under time constraints; working as part of a team with frequent interruptions; maintaining confidentiality communicating with diverse groups.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certification
  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of five years of experience involving commercial landscape maintenance is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, install, repair, and maintain landscape (e.g., lawns, shrubbery, trees, courtyards, flower beds, rakes leaves, pick up trash, etc.).
  • Evaluate, install, repair, and maintain all site grounds (e.g., storm drains, parking lots, walkways, etc.).
  • Evaluate, install, repair, and maintain athletic fields (e.g., apply fertilizer, sand, seed, field stripping, weeding, dugout maintenance, etc.).
  • Evaluate, install, repair, and maintain irrigation systems and components (familiarity with Hunter and Rain Bird irrigation system, components and full and half rotor irrigation heads).
  • Evaluate, install, repair, and maintain synthetic turf (e.g., sweeping, debris removal, turf repair, etc.).
  • Evaluate, install, repair, and maintain track surface (e.g., sweeping, debris removal, track surface repair, etc.).
  • Evaluate, install, repair, and maintain playgrounds and playground equipment (e.g., trash pickup, safety inspections to include surfacing and equipment).
  • Evaluate, install, repair, and maintain district fences.
  • Remove ice, snow, and debris from storm damage as necessary (hand tools and snow plow).
  • Coordinate s with Principals and coaches for the purposes of adjusting irrigation schedules, and field preparation, etc.
  • Safely operate equipment (e.g., trucks, tractors, mowers, backhoe, tandem axle trailer, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining District grounds.
  • Maintain accurate records and be able to prepare reports for the purpose of documenting pesticide application as required by state and federal requirements.
  • Order materials, supplies, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring that adequate materials are available to complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Transport s various items (e.g., tools, equipment, supplies, sand, rocks, fertilizer, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site s and/or other District activities.
  • Respond s to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
  • Assign work orders to the grounds department and follow through on work requests.
  • Lead other grounds employees for the purpose of ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner.
  • Give estimates on work projects.
  • Provide Facilities Manager with cost estimates on work projects which exceed daily spending allowances and/or projects that require multiple team members or contractors.
  • Review preventative maintenance procedures for efficiency on a routine basis using the agreed upon method (e.g., spreadsheet).
  • Assist in developing protocols and procedures to facilitate a productive and proactive grounds work force.
  • Assist the Facilities Supervisor in personnel related activities including review of time sheets, providing input to the supervisor on the performance evaluations (employee will not review other employee evaluations), employee training, safety procedures, and record keeping.
  • Meets regularly with the Facilities Supervisor to review and prioritize facility needs.
  • Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written sup port and/or conveying information.
  • Assists other grounds and maintenance personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
