About The Position

Primary Purpose: Supervise and manage vehicle maintenance shop operations, small engines and equipment for safety, appearance and operating efficiency Qualification Guidelines: Education/Certifications: High school diploma or GED Valid Texas driver's license Preferable vehicle motor mechanical experience Experience: Five years' experience in all phases of motor vehicles, small engine repairs and overhauls Two years' supervisory experience Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of vehicle engines Ability to find problems and repair immediately Ability to change brake linings Ability to overhaul motors and replace engine motors Ability to change tires Ability to correct and repair lighting systems to vehicle and trailers Ability to repair small engines such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, etc. Ability to manage operations, order parts and supervise other mechanics Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises two lower level mechanics Mental/Physical/Environmental Demands: Tools/Equipment Used: Heavy equipmentincluding tractors,trash truck,ridingmowers, gas powered weed eaters, blowers, edger and other grounds equipment, trucks and vans Posture/Motion/Lifting: Continuouswalking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, carrying and heavy lifting. Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, outside and inside Environment: Exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals (fertilizer) and loud noises. Frequent district-wide travel, works aroundmachinery withmoving parts Mental Demands: Demand to complete work orders quickly to repair vehicles in a safe working condition. Demand to complete work ordersfortrailers,smallengines,tires, etc., could cause a great deal of pressure and result in an unsafe work condition Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; communicate effectively and professionally at all times

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas driver's license
  • Five years' experience in all phases of motor vehicles, small engine repairs and overhauls
  • Two years' supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of vehicle engines
  • Ability to find problems and repair immediately
  • Ability to change brake linings
  • Ability to overhaul motors and replace engine motors
  • Ability to change tires
  • Ability to correct and repair lighting systems to vehicle and trailers
  • Ability to repair small engines such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, etc.
  • Ability to manage operations, order parts and supervise other mechanics

Responsibilities

  • Assign mechanic work and oversee completion.
  • Arrange for contract work when repairs cannot be made by district mechanics.
  • Assign priority to work orders and process them including tracking of labor and materials used.
  • Assign priority to vehicles that are checked out by district personnel making sure they are in proper working order, gassed and cleaned.
  • Estimate the cost and time required for special projects and order materials.
  • Interpret vehicle schematics and design.
  • Establish care for all vehicles, small engine lawnmowers and weed eaters, chain saws, etc.
  • Responsible for the upkeep and maintaining of all vehicles in the district, except buses.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of all roads and grounds/yard crew equipment including mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, portable generators, tractors, etc.
  • Sees that inspection stickers and inspections are up to date.
  • Keeps an accurate list of vehicle identification numbers and mileage readings.
  • Change oil and filters on all vehicles, mowers and tractors.
  • Lubrication to all vehicles, mowers and tractors.
  • Inspection of tires and rotation.
  • Inspection of brakes, lining and changes as needed.
  • Inspection of lighting systems to all vehicles, tractors and trailers.
  • Inspection of all portable generators to make sure they function immediately in an emergency.
  • Inspection of motors, belts, air conditioning systems.
  • Visual inspection to vehicle body for damages and report damage to Risk Manager and Maintenance Director.
  • Inspect the trash truck to make sure it is in proper working order, which includes hydraulic systems, cylinder and lift.
  • Instruct assigned personnel on proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Operate equipment and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Follow safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Ensure that vehicles, tractors, mowers, equipment and tools are in safe operating condition.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any non-corrected area to supervisor.
  • Coordinate the storage and use of all equipment, tools and supplies.
  • Order equipment and supplies and maintain accurate records.
  • Recommend replacement of existing equipment.
  • Assist in preparation of department budget information.
  • Work irregular hours and respond to after-hour emergency calls as needed.
  • Assist in recruiting, screening, training and evaluation of mechanics.
  • Assist in accurate information for payroll reporting for time cards, tardiness and absenteeism.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
