About The Position

The Lead Forestry Technician (Hotshot/Handcrew) serves as a lead wildland firefighter on a handcrew on a prescribed/suppression fire crew. The role involves performing prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop up, as well as constructing handlines in various vegetative types. The technician makes initial evaluations of fire situations, determines the rate of spread, potential hazards to property, and the appropriate suppression methods to use. Daily leadership and training for crewmembers is provided, serving as a working leader over three or more crewmembers, including at least one GS-05. The technician uses a variety of specialized tools and equipment to actively suppress fires and is responsible for chainsaw operation and maintenance. Training in wildland fire and safety techniques is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period.
  • Must pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • This is a drug testing designated position.
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management positions.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations.
  • Under age 37 or eligible for a waiver if older.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a skilled wildland firefighter on a specialty crew.
  • Certifications in technical specializations such as felling, saw repair, or water handling.
  • Experience directing and leading crew members in technical operations.
