About the position

The Lead Engineer - Protection & Control position at Avangrid Service Company involves overseeing the development of engineering standards and tools for the Protection and Control (P&C) Department. This role requires a strong background in power system fundamentals and offers the opportunity to work autonomously while mentoring junior engineers. The engineer will engage in various projects, including evaluating new technologies and vendors, and will be responsible for conducting engineering analyses and presenting findings to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of P&C engineering standards and relay setting file templates.
  • Conduct engineering analysis and research industry best practices.
  • Organize and facilitate meetings, presenting to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Document assignments and maintain record-keeping processes.
  • Evaluate new vendors and technologies for P&C applications.
  • Collaborate with other P&C engineers, departments, contractors, and vendors.
  • Provide informal mentorship to junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Minimum 7 years of Power System Electrical Engineering experience, with at least 2 years in Protection & Control.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; Master's degree preferred.
  • Strong understanding of power system fundamentals, including sequential components, per unit, harmonics, transformers, and fault analysis.
  • Experience or knowledge in IEC 61850, networking, real-time simulators, virtualized protection relays, and centralized substation protection.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of traditional generation and inverter-based generation.
  • Familiarity with GOOSE Data Models, Sampled Values, and MMS.
