The Mechanics of Materials & Life Methods Engineer will guide the development and validation of material characterization programs, from mechanical testing through advanced modeling and verification. The ideal candidate will bridge experimental testing and computational analysis to ensure robust material performance predictions.

  • Design and execute comprehensive mechanical testing programs including tensile, fatigue, creep, fracture toughness, and environmental exposure testing
  • Manage testing schedules, budgets, and vendor relationships for internal/external testing facilities
  • Process and analyze raw test data, and define statistical material models from this test data for use in gas turbine component finite element analyses and failure analyses
  • Perform microscopic evaluation of metallurgical structures of tested material to enhance prediction capability
  • Generate technical reports and presentations communicating test results, trends, and recommendations to stakeholders
  • Create material model input cards for use in finite element analysis tools (ANSYS and GEV in-house lifing tools)
  • Perform 1D and 3D verifications to refine material models to achieve target accuracy
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Materials, Metallurgical, Mechanical, or related discipline from an accredited college or university
  • At least 4 years relevant experience
  • Eligibility Requirements: This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.
  • Master's degree or Ph.D in engineering
  • Knowledge of nickel and steel alloys and their strengthening / deformation mechanisms
  • Knowledge of mechanical testing such as tensile, fatigue, and creep
  • Knowledge of fracture mechanics
  • Experience in test data analysis and material modeling
  • Experience with fatigue and life prediction methodologies
  • Familiarity with finite element methods
  • Familiarity with advanced materials (superalloys, additive manufacturing)
  • Programming skills (Python, MATLAB) for data processing and automation
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to drive projects to completion
