Position Summary: The Lead Director of Software Engineering is responsible for leading engineering teams that support the development, maintenance, and modernization of legacy systems—primarily IBM Mainframe platforms—used for commercial claims routing, adjudication, and operational reporting. This role ensures the reliability, scalability, and compliance of claims platforms, while partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver strategic outcomes aligned with enterprise goals.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with 5+ years in leadership roles.
  • Experience with legacy platforms supporting high-volume, business-critical workflows; IBM Mainframe experience is a strong plus but not required.
  • Proven experience managing large-scale adjudication systems and leading modernization efforts.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory compliance in claims processing.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with enterprise reporting platforms and data warehousing.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies adapted for legacy environments.
  • Leadership in matrixed organizations and cross-functional team management.

Responsibilities

  • Own engineering strategy and execution for commercial claims systems, including routing, adjudication, and operational reporting.
  • Lead teams working on legacy platforms, with a focus on IBM Mainframe technologies (e.g., COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS), while welcoming transferable experience from other legacy environments.
  • Collaborate with product, design, data, and business leaders in a 'Five-in-a-Box' model to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Drive modernization initiatives such as API enablement, data extraction, and selective migration to hybrid architectures.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal audit standards across claims workflows.
  • Promote engineering excellence through structured change management, performance optimization, and automation.
  • Manage vendor relationships and ensure seamless integration with external systems and services.
