The Lead DFx Support Engineer is a hands-on individual contributor responsible for driving manufacturability, assembly, serviceability and quality excellence across complex electrical and electromechanical products. This role provides authoritative Design for X leadership from early concept through NPI, production and sustaining phases, ensuring design intent translates into robust, scalable and repeatable factory execution. The position requires deep experience with manufacturing environments, tolerance management, and standardization strategies, along with the ability to influence design decisions across engineering, manufacturing, quality and supply chain organizations. The Lead DFx Support Engineer proactively identifies systemic risks, drives design improvements upstream and materially reduces manufacturing driven engineering changes, cost and field corrections. This role is part of the Data Center Infrastructure Team and can be located in Austin, TX or Remote, requiring up to 25% domestic and/or international travel (rare).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • Typically 8+ years of experience in DFx, manufacturing focused design, production engineering, or related roles supporting industrial or infrastructure class equipment.
  • Proven ability to evaluate complex designs and influence design direction to improve manufacturability and quality.
  • Deep understanding of tolerance management, assembly processes and production system constraints.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead DFx efforts and influence cross functional teams without direct authority.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting power and cooling equipment such as switchgear, PDCs, CDUs, transformers, chillers or similar mission critical infrastructure.
  • Hands‑on experience in factory environments supporting prototype builds, NPI and high mix or low volume production.
  • Strong familiarity with electrical panel construction, wiring methods, labeling standards and industrial assembly practices.
  • Experience working within PLM systems and formal engineering change processes.
  • Track record of reducing manufacturing driven ECRs/ECNs and improving production yield or cycle time through design changes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior‑level DFx guidance to ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, assembly efficiency, service access, and long‑term quality.
  • Lead DFx evaluations during concept, design reviews and release readiness activities, identifying risks before product release.
  • Establish clear, actionable manufacturability requirements aligned to factory capabilities, takt time and quality objectives.
  • Drive cross program standardization and part rationalization initiatives to reduce variation, cost and supply chain risk.
  • Influence architectural and layout decisions to promote reuse of proven components, wiring practices and panel designs.
  • Champion robust design principles that minimize sensitivity to tolerance variation and assembly variability.
  • Lead tolerance stack-up analysis and assembly feasibility assessments in coordination with mechanical and manufacturing engineering.
  • Identify fit, clearance, and accessibility risks that could impact yield, serviceability or safety.
  • Recommend and validate design changes that improve assembly robustness and repeatability.
  • Serve as the senior technical conduit for manufacturing feedback, ensuring production learnings are systematically fed back into design standards.
  • Proactively reduce manufacturing driven ECRs/ECNs by resolving producibility concerns prior to design release.
  • Support root cause analysis of recurring manufacturing or quality issues and drive corrective and preventative design actions.
  • Partner with manufacturing engineering, quality, supply chain, and production leaders during prototype builds, pilot runs and production ramp ups.
  • Mentor junior engineers on DFx best practices and manufacturing aware design approaches.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of enterprise DFx processes, guidelines and release criteria.
