About The Position

At IPS, we are global leaders in developing innovative solutions for the consulting, architecture, engineering, project controls, procurement, construction management, and CQV of technically complex facilities, primarily in the life sciences industry. We are looking for a talented Lead Mechanical Designer to join our dedicated team at our headquarters in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. In this role, you will work independently on various projects as assigned by a Manager. You will also play a role in the entire design process, including but not limited to preliminary assessments, concept creation, design, problem resolution, and customer and vendor coordination. Furthermore, you may work on several concurrent projects and, at times, may assist as a technical expert on a specialized design.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of previous design experience, with at least 4 years of it acting in the role of Project Lead.
  • Technical or Associate Degree in design from an accredited technical institution or college.
  • Must be proficient in the use of engineering design programs and computer-aided drafting (AutoCAD/Revit/Navisworks).
  • Has a demonstrated ability to manage projects, problem solve, communicate effectively with all key personnel, and manage time.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven time management skills to juggle more than one project at a time.
  • Thorough knowledge of system design and applicable codes.
  • Must be able to stand, sit, and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Must possess the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl as required.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb ladders as necessary.
  • Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, which may include exposure to varying working conditions.
  • Must be able to adhere to strict cleanroom gowning protocol.
  • This position will have 5-20% travel, or as required by the assigned project.
  • You may be assigned to a client site for an extended period.
  • Overnight travel or staying in the city of the Client’s location is possible, depending on the assignment.

  • You will visit Client sites and will be required to adhere to stated safety rules.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.
  • Must have the ability to travel and commute on a daily or routine basis.
  • This position is a safety-sensitive position.
  • The employee is designated for field work and attends activities at client sites where they work in construction, process, packaging, manufacturing, research, or other "non-administrative" areas.
  • All interviews are conducted either in person or virtually, with video required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Project Lead with design computations and quantity estimates, and develops probable construction cost estimates.
  • Perform the role of Project Lead for less complex projects within the business unit.
  • Promotes the use of and participates in the development of company design and production standards.
  • Assists in the education and development of design staff and acts as a resource for design questions.
  • Prepares reports, specifications, plans, and supports construction for projects.
  • Assesses the requirements of a project, breaks a project into tasks, and works with a Project Manager to determine the scope of work, budget, and staffing.
  • Uses computer-aided design technologies to develop sketches, drawings, and construction documents.
  • Reviews drawings and documents to ensure compliance with company design and production standards.
  • Selects equipment based on recommendations of the Project Lead and fills out equipment schedules.
  • Creates drawings of your designs and produces markups to be incorporated into drawings by the design team.
  • Research design options and document findings for the Project Lead.
  • Keeps the Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project scope or additional services.
  • Researches code issues and communicates with code officials, as well as other disciplines.
  • Makes clear, well-organized, and effective presentations to a technical audience.
  • Ensures that drawings and designs are per company's quality, production, and design standards.
  • Mentors, supports, and guides Designers and Engineers who are early in their careers with project execution.
  • Makes calculations, using engineering formulas and skills for design such as air/water distribution equipment sizing, air balance and pressure drop calculations, heat gain/loss load studies, and utility (chilled/hot water and steam) service sizing calculations.
  • Creates specialized drawings, such as operations matrices, elevations, or details, and diagrams.
  • Performs additional tasks or special projects as assigned.
