As a Lead Data Scientist , you’ll be responsible for applying innovative statistical and machine learning methods in a scientifically rigorous manner to dive into the largest and most complex data across the enterprise to answer the most difficult questions that are foundational to driving real-world value by offering deep insight into every aspect of the business. In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead the technical direction for the data science team on the most important strategic efforts to provide analytic thought leadership that drives a data-grounded perspective to help Best Buy think critically and differently about all aspects of our business to improve our core capabilities and unleash the next generation of customer experiences that will transform the way Best Buy operates day-to-day.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a highly quantitative field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Math, Operations Research, etc) or equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of experience in data science, data analysis, data mining or other similar business functions.
  • Advanced degrees in relevant fields may be counted towards experience requirements.
  • 2+ years of experience working in cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure)
  • Advanced proficiency with at least one data science/analytics programming language (Python, R, Julia)
  • Advanced skills in data wrangling, validating data and solutions, supervised & unsupervised learning, AI & ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow), designing complex algorithms and statistical models, and applied mathematics & statistics

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or Ph.D in a highly quantitative field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Math, Operations Research, etc)
  • Experience using high performance machine learning and/or data mining frameworks
  • Experience building distributed data processing pipelines (e.g. Apache Spark, Apache Beam)
  • 5-8 years hands-on data science experience (in addition to advanced degree)
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to a wide spectrum of cross-functional team members

Responsibilities

  • Leading the application of scientific methods to solve real-world business problems using data across multiple business domains
  • Developing and implementing cutting edge statistical and machine learning methods to dig deep into complex data to deliver data-driven solutions across all areas of the business including market growth, retail portfolio, customer retention, services, etc.
  • Employing broad and deep knowledge of statistics, analytics, and machine learning to contribute to and enhance Best Buy’s core data science capabilities
  • Leading discussions with business partners to identify the biggest opportunities to bring Best Buy to the next level and influence key decisions around real products that impact and improve the lives of millions of people
  • Acting as a mentor for junior data scientists, assign tasks and review for quality and completion
  • Conducting discussions with technical and non-technical product team members to determine feasibilities of recommended solutions.
  • Collaborating with other engineers and product team members to implement and deploy scalable solutions.
  • Presenting results of any analyses in a manner that is interpretable and technical approach of machine learning product design to team and leadership.
