State Farm is seeking an experienced data scientist with a passion for mentoring others to serve as a technical lead of the Modeling & Analytics Graduate Network (MAGNet) internship program. The MAGNet program is a primary pipeline for data science talent at State Farm. The individual selected for this role will have the chance to expand both their technical & leadership skills by overseeing the day-to-day operation of the MAGNet program based in Champaign, IL, in cooperation with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Outside of the responsibilities of the MAGNet operation, the individual selected for this role will contribute to the development of AI/ML educational materials, intended for a variety of internal audiences, and support HR&D data science. This is a full-time role with a hybrid working arrangement with a preference for the individual to be based out of Champaign, IL, but individuals in Bloomington or one of the State Farm hubs will also be considered. Requirements

Completed master’s or other advanced degree in an analytical field such as statistics, mathematics, economics, data science, quantitative marketing, operations research, industrial engineering, etc.
Experience building advanced analytic solutions using generalized linear models and at least one of the following: time series analysis, cluster analysis, tree-based algorithms, or neural networks
Proficiency with Python, R, or SAS
Familiarity with cloud-based environments (e.g., AWS) or Linux
Strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple, diverse stakeholders across business areas and leadership levels

Nice To Haves

Experience serving as mentor/coach of junior data scientists or interns
Experience managing multiple technical projects simultaneously
Experience with designing, building, and implementing AI solutions (e.g., natural language processing, large language models, computer vision, generative AI)
Experience with gathering and interpreting business requirements to design and create scalable data science solutions in a regulatory environment (including, but not limited to, insurance, healthcare, and finance).
Familiarity with concepts related to the design of experiments & the analysis of unstructured data

Responsibilities

hiring & developing graduate students working as year-round, State Farm MAGNet interns
tasked with solving applied data science problems at State Farm
work closely with the MAGNet programs at other locations to source & scope project work for the MAGNet interns
serve as a liaison between State Farm’s data science community & the sourcing graduate programs at UIUC

Potential starting salary range: $107,000 - $142,000
Starting salary will be based on skills, background, and experience
Potential yearly incentive pay up to 15% of base salary
