Operates the ultrasound equipment, performs a wide variety of technical procedures, and assumes the responsibility for the patients in the area. This position requires age related competencies. Responsibilities The Lead CV Sonographer responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs transthoracic echocardiographic ultrasound procedures (neonates through geriatric), including exercise and pharmacological stress exam. Assists in the performance of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) exams while operating within the scope of a sonographer. Performs 2D, pulsed wave and color flow Doppler evaluations on the upper and lower extremities for both arterial and venous systems. Performs visceral vascular and carotid imaging. Performs segmental blood pressure, volume pulse recording and non-imaging physiologic exams on the upper and lower extremities Performs microcavitation and ultrasound enhancement studies in accordance with facility policy and patient need. Performs appropriate measurement and enforces laboratory measurement / calculation accuracy for each of the ultrasound exams. Reviews inpatient requisitions and prioritizes patient list in order of severity of illness, special procedures, special requests, equipment availability and patient need. Revises patient schedule as new procedures are requested and circumstances change. Assists in the coordination and execution of routine quality assurance actions for ultrasound and departmental equipment. Responsible for procurement, storage and routing of supplies for room preparation as needed to insure smooth functioning of the department. Serves as preceptor for students enrolled in an accredited sonography program and identifies additional qualified ultrasound staff to optimize educational needs. Applies surgical technique during performance of sterile procedures. Champions infection prevention and High-Level Disinfection (HLD) efforts in the processing of semi-critical devices in accordance with System and facility policy. Facilitates communication of preliminary exam findings to interpreting physicians. Provides clinical and technical instruction to sonography staff Assists in employee scheduling, orientation, evaluation and disciplinary action as needed. For Diagnostic Cardiology only: Coordinates and monitors compliance with adopted accreditation body while serving as Technical Director (American College of Radiology or Intersocietal Accreditation Commission) Reports to the respective departmental Operations Manager or Director. Exposed to moveable equipment, chemical fumes from processors while developing films, patients with contagious diseases, electrical equipment, ionizing radiation, and contamination or infection through accidental needle puncture or exposure to blood and/or body fluids. Occasional exposures to odor, blood, chemical irritation, and a variety of constant interruption, frequent emergency call back causing erratic working hours and overtime and works in a darkened room up to 60% of the time.
