About The Position

Custodial Lead (or Lead Custodian) functions as a "working supervisor," meaning they perform regular cleaning tasks while also coordinating the daily activities, training, and performance of a custodial team. They typically serve as the primary link between front-line staff and higher-level facility management.

Requirements

  • Experience: Usually requires 2–3 years of prior custodial experience, often in a commercial or public setting.
  • Education: A high school diploma or GED.
  • Physical Demands: Must be able to stand for long periods and lift heavy objects, typically between 50 and 75 pounds.
  • Certifications: Often requires a valid driver’s license; some positions may also require forklift or specialized floor care certifications.
  • Communication: Ability to relay instructions clearly and maintain effective relationships with staff and public visitors. In English
  • Problem-Solving: Capability to adapt to changing priorities, such as responding to emergency cleanups or staff shortages.
  • Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of modern cleaning chemicals (SDS/MSDS) and industrial cleaning machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Assign daily tasks, develop work schedules, and monitor the progress of custodial staff to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Training & Onboarding: Instruct new and seasonal employees on proper cleaning techniques, safe chemical handling, and the operation of heavy equipment like Zamboni, floor buffers and carpet extractors.
  • Facility Maintenance: Perform routine cleaning (sweeping, mopping, sanitizing) while also handling minor non-technical repairs, such as replacing light bulbs or unclogging sinks or toilets.
  • Security & Safety: Secure buildings by locking doors and setting alarms. They also identify and report safety hazards or major maintenance needs to supervisors.
  • Inventory Management: Monitor supply levels (soap, paper products, chemicals), place orders when low, and ensure all equipment is properly maintained.
  • Event Support: Coordinate the setup and teardown of furniture (chairs, tables, stages) for meetings, sports, and special events.
