About The Position

Reporting to the Technical Manager/Radiology, provides necessary supervision of CT, assigns work, and prepares work schedules. Serves as the contact person for other departments. Performs all clinical and clerical duties of a CT Radiographer, and performs other related duties as assigned. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited school of Radiologic Technology and 3-5 years of experience required

  • Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time.
  • Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients.
  • Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as team leader, providing supervision necessary for smooth operation of a combined staff from both sites.
  • Assigns work and is responsible for or delegates work schedule preparation.
  • Communicates approved policies and procedures to subordinates and ensures compliance. Recommends changes to policies and procedures when necessary and may participate in the development and implementation of such changes.
  • Responsible for additional coverage as needed to cover absent staff or increased work load. Adjusts staff according to work load.
  • Reports problems related to staffing, morale, work methods, procedures, and transfers, and recommends action in all personnel matters for assigned staff.
  • Works with Technical Manager on hiring, orientation, training, and developing new hires. Evaluates performance and when necessary recommends discipline and discharge.
  • Coordinates educational and development activities for staff members. Provides in-service training in new techniques and equipment. Ensures that staff members have the necessary clinical, employment, administrative, and hospital information to perform their routine duties.
  • Monitors all radiation safety procedures and ensures that all procedures are performed in accordance with applicable regulatory, accrediting, and governmental safety standards.
  • Compiles and analyzes quality assurance/quality control data according to departmental procedures, or may delegate these activities to subordinates as needed.
  • Obtains patient history and other pre-scan information through review of records and additional examinations (BUN, creatinine, standard radiographs, etc.) and patient interview. Consults with radiologist on proper protocol for each exam. Coordinates and communicates activities with other Radiology areas.
  • Prepares patients for examinations ordered. Sets protocols for specific exams and factors for proper radiation exposure. Explains exam to patient.
  • Assists patients onto tables and positions patient properly for each exam. Starts IVs and administers contrast media when required for ordered exam. Bolus required amount of contrast media for each exam performed.
  • Sets, calibrates, monitors, and operates complex equipment in performing scans. Constantly monitors patient status, particularly when contrast media are being used. Intervenes if patient suffers adverse reactions. Initiates CPR as needed.
  • Interprets and graphs Houndsfield numbers to determine bone and abnormal tissue density.
  • Processes and films scans through processing equipment and reviews quality of scans obtained. Recognizes abnormalities and refers films for immediate interpretation by a radiologist. Reviews films prepared by other CT Technologists. Transfers information from computer onto magnetic tape for storage.
  • May also perform special studies such as biopsies and cyst drainage. Sets up special study trays using sterile technique. Prepares patient for exam and assists radiologist or physician during the procedure.
  • Sets up appointments for scans and may prepare requisitions.
  • Obtains radiologist's report and provides information to physician or inpatient unit requesting stat report.
  • Maintains accurate and complete information on all procedures performed, patient reaction/status, and other pertinent information for individual patient charts or departmental records.
  • Ensures work areas are kept in a clean and orderly condition and that adequate supplies are stocked. May initiate requisitions for needed supplies.
  • Monitors the operation of equipment. In the event of equipment failure, runs analytical programs, determines where problem is, and corrects problem or advises supervisor of need for service or maintenance.
  • Transports patients to and from the unit or gives work direction to Radiology Assistants.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge in the field or radiography and computerized axial tomography.
  • May give on-the-job training and work direction to student technologists.
  • Participates in quality assurance/quality control activities as directed.
  • Maintains unsupervised access to the unit medication room(s) for stocking and/or retrieving supplies.
