About The Position

This program supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Specialty Lead Counselor supports the daily operations of their assigned program area at Hampton’s Camp Greenway. This role provides leadership to campers and counselors, helps plan and lead engaging activities, and ensures a safe, positive, and well-organized camp experience. Specialty Lead Counselors are hands-on leaders who model positive behavior, support staff, and help campers feel safe, included, and engaged throughout the camp day.

Requirements

  • Prior experience working with children required; leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience in the specialty area (arts, sports, STEM, or teen programming) preferred.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Patient, energetic, and dependable.
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information.
  • Ability to stay calm and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to complete YMCA required trainings as scheduled by management.
  • Must maintain current CPR and First Aid/AED certifications.
  • Must successfully clear FBI and state criminal background checks.
  • Ability to walk, stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, push, and pull.
  • Ability to lift up to 15lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors for entire shift, regardless of weather.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead daily activities within the assigned specialty area.
  • Prepare materials to support daily activities.
  • Ensure specialty activities are inclusive for varying skill levels and ages.
  • Encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
  • Support and guide counselors working within the specialty group.
  • Assist with planning age-appropriate activities and weekly themes.
  • Actively supervise campers and staff during activities, transitions, and group times.
  • Encourage creativity, self-expression, and participation for all skill levels.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of the activity space.
  • Promote positive behavior, teamwork, and inclusion among campers.
  • Utilize YMCA behavior management strategies to support campers and redirect behavior.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming activity space.
  • Communicate camper or staff concerns to Camp leadership as needed.
  • Ensure program supplies and equipment are used safely and responsibly.
  • Participate in staff training and ongoing professional development.
  • Adhere to YMCA policies related to safety, supervision, and professional boundaries.
  • Complete required abuse prevention and risk management training.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Assist with special events, theme days, and camp-wide activities as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by Camp Leadership.
