About The Position

The Lead Counsel, Strategic Initiatives reports to the Senior Lead Counsel, Strategic Initiatives and plays a central role in shaping and advancing the company’s litigation policy strategy across the United States. The person in this position focuses on identifying internal and external opportunities to proactively influence legal policy developments, assess litigation trends, and coordinate strategic responses aligned with enterprise priorities. This person supports the development and implementation of both short- and long-term litigation policy strategies, leveraging tools such as coalition engagement, multi-approach policy reform, regulatory advocacy, and amicus participation. The Lead Counsel partners closely with cross-functional stakeholders to translate strategic priorities into actionable plans, driving alignment and execution across a broad range of initiatives with legal, policy, and reputational implications. The right person combines strong legal analysis and policy acumen with disciplined project management capabilities, enabling the effective coordination of internal teams, outside counsel, and external partners in a dynamic and highly collaborative environment. The Strategic Initiatives team is part of the Litigation group within Global Governance. The team focuses on advancing proactive litigation policy strategies that support enterprise priorities across the United States. By monitoring litigation trends and identifying opportunities for engagement, the team helps align legal positioning with broader business objectives. Working closely with internal legal partners, Corporate Affairs, and other cross-functional stakeholders, the team coordinates initiatives involving coalition engagement, regulatory advocacy, and amicus strategy. The environment is collaborative and fast-paced, requiring strong judgment, clear communication, and effective coordination across multiple stakeholders.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of legal experience, with a strong foundation in litigation, legal policy, or regulatory engagement.
  • Experience litigating in private practice and/or government; counseling in-house (corporate or non-profit); and/or working on complex policy or coalition initiatives within federal or state agencies or nonprofit coalition environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing varied, complex strategic initiatives involving numerous internal and external stakeholders on issues with legal, policy, and broader enterprise implications.
  • Experience managing and coordinating cross-functional resources, including legal, policy, and external partners.
  • Strong legal and policy analysis skills, paired with the organizational discipline and operational rigor required to manage multiple concurrent initiatives.
  • The ability to translate strategic priorities into structured action plans, driving alignment, accountability, and measurable progress.
  • Sound judgment and executive presence, with experience advising senior leaders and collaborating across large, matrixed organizations.
  • Active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to support stakeholder engagement and strategic initiatives.
  • Law degree from an accredited law school and 6 years’ experience in law.
  • License to practice law in at least one state.
  • 2 years’ experience leading cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Litigation Policy Strategy Development — Assist in developing, managing, and implementing the company’s litigation policy strategy at both the federal and state levels.
  • Trend Analysis & Strategic Assessment — Monitor and analyze litigation and regulatory trends to identify risks and opportunities, recommending proactive engagement strategies.
  • Amicus & Strategic Engagement Coordination — Identify matters appropriate for amicus participation or strategic engagement; coordinate internal review and approvals; and collaborate with external coalitions and partners to advance aligned positions.
  • Coalition & Stakeholder Engagement — Serve as a supplemental point of contact for external stakeholders, including trade associations, advocacy organizations, and other coalition partners, fostering collaborative approaches to shared legal and policy objectives.
  • Regulatory & Policy Engagement — Support engagement efforts related to regulatory and policy reform initiatives, working closely with internal partners to ensure coordinated and consistent positioning.
  • Cross-Functional Project Management — Lead and manage complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives involving legal, policy, and operational considerations; back-plan from strategic objectives to drive disciplined execution of intermediate milestones and deliverables.
  • Resource Coordination — Coordinate cross-functional resources and outside vendor support to advance strategic initiatives efficiently and effectively.
