About The Position

Role & Responsibilities: The responsibilities and duties described here are representative of those anticipated for the Breakaway Lead Instructor. This is not a comprehensive list and other duties may be assigned. The primary goal of this position is to enhance the Breakaway experience for members: this includes building class attendance, improving member engagement, ensuring fun and effective programming, and more. Responsibilities include: General: Identify new opportunities for CPf Breakaway program such as: Innovative class ideas plus a deep understanding of program’s competition Proposals on potential equipment and studio upgrades Communicate with each site’s Hospitality, Fitness Concierge and Operations teams to carry out any necessary on-site tasks, including substitutions, technical issues, studio maintenance, and equipment needs Maintain a strong presence in all clubs including during peak hours such as evenings and weekends, at various member events, and on social media Serve as a brand ambassador for Chelsea Piers Fitness Seek excellence and progress in all tasks Program Management: Sharpen & develop Breakaway core program using technology and equipment currently in use Develop new class styles, technology applications, and marketing initiatives to ensure that Breakaway at Chelsea Piers Fitness is recognized as a leader in the cycling industry Help create an engaging and diverse schedule that speaks to a broad member base Collaborate with Marketing to promote classes, special events, promotions, themed rides, and more Team Leadership Minimum one year experience leading a team of 5+ people Cycling Team Leadership: Work with Group Fitness Director to develop class & instructor guidelines and standards Train, mentor, evaluate, and manage cycling instructor staff, including: Ensure all instructors implement an effective, engaging, on-brand Breakaway experience Ensure all instructors adhere to expectations in Chelsea Piers Fitness & Group Fitness handbooks Assist with schedule management, substitutions, payroll, and evaluations Assist with social media outreach / marketing to help all instructors gain a following Recruit and develop talent Expanding program / instructor knowledge base – training, workshops, etc. Auditing and coaching instructors on teaching styles and building music playlists Maintain hiring and evaluation procedures Class, Training and Onboarding Content Develop clear class structures Develop audio and video content that supports recruitment, hiring and training Staff training: Quarterly Staff Meetings: Dates & hours pre-approved by Group Fitness Director Goal is to conduct regular team meetings to review best practices and new formats New Club Trainings Launch training of 10-12 hours anticipated per club Goal is to prepare new and existing instructors to teach in all/ new locations Instruction: Serve as Lead instructor teaching at least two classes per week at at least 3 New York City locations. Recommended teaching at least 8+ classes per week (evenly split across teaching locations) Develop a strong following across Chelsea Piers Fitness clubs through member engagement inside and outside of the studios Serve as lead substitute for Breakaway classes when necessary Performance Factors: Personal Class Quality – consistently performing above average in class utilization and evaluations Club Class Quality – improve class utilization in all clubs / offered classes; improve subjective and objective performance of all Breakaway class experience Class Attendance – consistent attendance at 80% of capacity during peak hours, 60% during non-peak hours This applies to both personal classes and all other Breakaway classes on the schedule Class Policies – consistently follow class policies such as following uniform requirements, creating excellent/inclusive playlists, adhering to substitution guidelines, and more This applies to both personal classes and all other Breakaway classes on the schedule Social Media/Member Engagement – form a following, promote Chelsea Piers schedule ./ content on personal accounts, attend member events, and more This applies to both personal classes and all other Breakaway classes on the schedule

Requirements

  • Candidates must have at least 3 years of cycling experience
  • At least one year of Team management / leadership experience
  • High-energy, personable and passion for fitness with a team-first mentality.
  • Self-motivated/entrepreneurial spirit with an outgoing, diligent and affable disposition.
  • Superior customer service skills; excellent and clear communication skills, both verbal and written; strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Organizational skills, including management of multiple projects and technologies; and a familiarity or willingness to learn Microsoft Outlook, Teams and Exerp
  • Ability to adapt to change and a willingness to improve and evolve
  • Reliable
  • Effective communicator

Nice To Haves

  • Experience at either national boutique studios or large fitness clubs preferred

Responsibilities
