About The Position

The Lead Animal Care Technician plays a key leadership role in ensuring exceptional patient care and supporting daily hospital and boarding operations. In addition to providing hands-on animal care, this position serves as a mentor and resource to the animal care team, helping to uphold hospital standards, efficiency, and compassionate care.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in animal care, kennel, or veterinary hospital settings.
  • Strong knowledge of cleaning, disinfecting, and biosecurity protocols.
  • Proficiency in proper animal handling and restraint techniques.
  • Ability to safely perform moderately heavy physical labor (lifting large dogs, bags of food or litter, etc.).
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach when working with sick, injured, or anxious animals.
  • Ability to administer medications and recognize abnormal or concerning conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail with accurate documentation and recordkeeping.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to maintain positive, cooperative working relationships.
  • Willingness to take initiative, support team development, and contribute to continuous improvement within the hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and participate in the daily care, feeding, medicating, and monitoring of patients in both the hospital and boarding facility.
  • Lead by example in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized environment, including cleaning, laundry, bathing, feeding, walking dogs, and disinfecting kennels and common areas.
  • Support post-operative and hospitalized patients, ensuring comfort, proper monitoring, and accurate documentation.
  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary assistants with animal restraint, examinations, and procedures as needed.
  • Ensure proper recordkeeping of medications, special diets, appetite, behavior, and any changes or concerns while animals are in our care.
  • Maintain inventory levels and oversee restocking of hospital supplies.
  • Train, mentor, and support Animal Care Technicians, reinforcing best practices, protocols, and hospital standards.
  • Assist with cleaning and sterilizing surgical instruments and ensuring compliance with safety and sanitation protocols.
  • Communicate effectively with leadership regarding patient care concerns, workflow improvements, and team needs.
