About The Position

The Lead Academic Advisor provides advanced academic advising and program leadership within the college. The individual in this role provides advising support for new/emerging academic majors, centralized academic programs, and units in need of temporary advising assistance, advising students on university policy and procedures, program and degree requirements, and related academic matters. They will lead and develop communication templates and messaging strategies, provide reports and data to support retention efforts, and assist in reaching out to students. This position applies expert knowledge of advising principles, curriculum, and institutional policies to manage complex student cases, lead strategic initiatives, and mentor junior advisors. The role serves as a decision-maker for curricular exceptions, leads large-scale projects, and manages data and assessment processes to improve retention and graduation outcomes. While not classified as a manager, the Lead Academic Advisor may supervise one professional staff member or student employees and assign work to others. The Lead Advisor serves as liaison with the central advising office in the college, and the Associate Dean for Workplace Culture and Student Success to advance our student success efforts. They will provide additional support to assigned department(s) and work on special projects as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree required.
  • Five years of relevant experience.
  • Expert understanding of programs, specialty areas, and academic and university policies.
  • Demonstrates adaptive relational skills.
  • Demonstrates superior communication skills; able to provide detail, depth, and context.
  • Able to recommend and implement policy, practice, and program changes to unit and/or university leadership.
  • Utilizes and integrates historical knowledge of the academic advising profession.
  • Applies theory to advising practice across different student populations.
  • Understands and follows FERPA guidelines; trains, interprets, and explains FERPA guidelines to colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Able to support/mentor, and in some cases supervise, other advisors on complex topics.
  • Demonstrates sophisticated cultural competence across multiple cultures and/or identities.
  • Informs policy and practices by predicting student population and their program.
  • Builds relationships with students and provides proactive communication.
