About The Position

The Apprentice Cable Splicer position at CenterPoint Energy involves joining the High Voltage Operations Team in Houston, TX. The role is designed for individuals to progress through a structured apprenticeship program, which includes hands-on training and classroom instruction. The apprentice will perform general labor, assist in the maintenance and repair of electrical distribution systems, and work in various weather conditions. This position requires a commitment to safety and reliability in delivering utility services.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent knowledge of English grammar and mathematics required.
  • Two years of experience in electrical work, electronics, engineering, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Certification from a Technical college relative to electric distribution is preferred.
  • Ability to learn to use power tools and lift equipment.
  • Ability to care for hand tools and equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in industry-related work, commercial, and/or military experience can offset the education requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general labor and assist in the apprenticeship program for the Major Underground Distribution System.
  • Progress through six, 6-month training steps by completing all requirements, including written, oral, and demonstration skill tests.
  • Attend climbing school within the first 90 days and demonstrate the ability to climb and work off the ground.
  • Assist in construction, maintenance, relocations, and repairs of medium and low voltage distribution cables and equipment.
  • Work as directed to assist in the restoration of electrical service.
  • Interpret blueprints, schematics, work orders, manuals, and other technical materials related to the job.
  • Operate company vehicles safely and in compliance with applicable laws and company policies.
  • Learn to operate computers, electronics, and software relevant to daily activities.
  • Utilize volt meters, amp meters, and other similar devices.
