About The Position

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: This position is responsible for the following: Other duties may be assigned. Accurately referring points, dimensions, and patterns on metal sheets, plates, and structural shapes. Ensure parts are fabricated, aligned, and assembled correctly according to engineering blueprints and specifications, minimizing errors in downstream manufacturing processes. Read and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, sketches, and specifications to determine layout requirements. Lay out reference points, centerlines, bend lines, hole locations, and other dimensions on materials using precision tools (e.g., scribes, dividers, protractors, trammels, rules, compasses, height gauges, and surface plates). Position and align workpieces manually or using hoists/cranes, fixtures, jigs, parallel blocks, angle plates, or other setup aids. Add dimensional details, notes, or modifications to blueprints when needed. Fabricate simple templates from wood, paper, or metal as required for repetitive work. Apply layout fluids/pigments (e.g., Prussian blue or chalk) to surfaces for clear marking visibility. Inspect and verify layout for accuracy and conformance to tolerances before passing work to fabricators, welders, or machinists. Collaborate with fitters, welders, foremen, and quality control to resolve layout issues on the shop floor. Maintain tools, equipment, and workspace in a safe, organized condition. Adhere to all safety protocols, including proper use of PPE and handling of heavy materials. Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED; and or training in metal fabrication, welding, machining, or drafting preferred.
  • Two (2) to Five (5) or more years of hands-on experience in metal layout, structural fabrication, shipbuilding, pressure vessel fabrication, or related industry.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Proficiency with traditional layout tools and measuring instruments.
  • Good mathematical skills (fractions/decimals) for calculations and angle/dimensional work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using CAD software preferred.
  • Certification in blueprint reading or welding inspection preferred.
  • Familiarity with fabrication processes (cutting, forming, welding) is a strong plus.
