About The Position

The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking law students for its Summer 2025 Volunteer Law Clerk Program. This program is designed for students who have completed their first year of law school and are interested in gaining practical legal experience in a public-service environment. Law clerks will work in both the Civil and Criminal Divisions, engaging in research, drafting legal documents, and collaborating with Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs). The program emphasizes mentorship and provides opportunities to observe legal proceedings and interact with various legal professionals.

Requirements

  • Must have completed either the first or second year of law school.
  • Superior research and writing skills.
  • Detail-oriented and dedicated to upholding justice and human rights.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must meet DOJ residency requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Research and draft pretrial, trial, and appellate briefs and motions.
  • Work directly with AUSAs on short- and long-term projects.
  • Observe trials, motions, settlement conferences, and appellate arguments.
  • Participate in meetings with federal legal system speakers and professionals.
  • Engage in training sessions related to legal practice and law enforcement.
