About The Position

The Law Student Volunteer position at the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) Section of the U.S. Department of Justice offers law students an opportunity to gain practical experience in personal injury law and litigation. Interns will engage in substantive legal work, including research and analysis, while participating in a variety of educational and networking activities throughout the summer. This role is designed for students who have completed their first year of law school and are looking to enhance their legal skills in a supportive environment.

Requirements

  • Must have completed the first full year of law school by May/June 2025 for 1L applicants.
  • Must be in excellent academic standing.
  • Strong writing, research, and analytical skills are required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national.
  • Ability to pass a background check is necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with legal writing and analysis.
  • Familiarity with federal tort law and personal injury cases.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in litigation development and settlement strategy.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis on federal rules of procedure and state tort law issues.
  • Complete substantive assignments related to personal injury and property damage cases.
  • Participate in the Summer Brown Bag Lunch Speakers' Series featuring legal professionals and judges.
  • Engage in team collaboration and communication, especially in a remote work setting.
