About The Position

The Law Student Volunteer position in the Phoenix Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice offers law students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in federal criminal prosecution. Externs will engage in various legal tasks, including research, writing briefs, assisting with trial preparations, and observing court proceedings. This role is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system and the workings of the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Requirements

  • Must be a first, second, or third year law student
  • Strong grades in law school
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Background check required

  • Experience in criminal defense law
  • Prior internships or volunteer work in legal settings

Responsibilities

  • Research legal issues in active cases
  • Write briefs filed in the District Court or the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals
  • Assist with trial preparation and evidence review

  • Observe hearings, jury selection, and trials
  • Contribute to various projects related to federal criminal prosecution
