About The Position

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA) is seeking law students or graduate-level students in business or accounting to work in our Minneapolis Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) beginning at the end of May 2026 and continuing through the Fall 2026 semester and Spring 2027 semester. Candidates must be students through the Spring 2027 semester and be available to work the full year. Candidates must be residents of Minnesota. The position will be paid at $23 per hour, full-time (32 hours per week) during the summer and 15 hours per week during the school year semesters. The position is hybrid, with the option of being fully remote as mutually agreed. This position is part of the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) at Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA). LITC advocates protect clients’ income and assets by representing them in federal income tax disputes. LITC advocates utilize a person-centered approach to assist clients from diverse backgrounds including language diversity in accordance with MMLA’s Racial Justice Values Statement. Common issues handled by the LITC include requests for innocent spouse relief, collection matters, denials of available deductions and credits, and tax problems stemming from tax-related identity theft.

Requirements

  • Interest and experience with tax issues, personally, professionally, or academically. Please address this specifically in a cover letter especially if it does not appear on the resume.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, excellent attention to detail.
  • Respectful and patient telephone demeanor.
  • Interest / background in serving low-income clients, including people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Self-motivated worker.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, multi-task, and work well under pressure.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office required.

Responsibilities

  • Apply the principles of MMLA's Racial Justice Values Statement in all interactions.
  • Interview clients to collect information and documents about their tax issues.
  • Work closely with supervisor to decide which alternatives are available to clients to resolve their tax disputes and prepare applications for those alternatives.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Attend team meetings.
  • Outreach and educational activities as interest and time allow.
  • Other duties as assigned.
