The North Carolina Court of Appeals is excited to be seeking ambitious Law School Interns to provide administrative duties as well as legal research, analysis, and interpretation of case law on a variety of court cases. This is a great opportunity for you to gain hands-on knowledge of the court system as well as learn under a Court of Appeals Judge. Your essential duties and responsibilities as an intern include but are not limited to the following: Provide administrative support. Conduct required legal research. Analyze legal data and issues. Prepare legal memoranda. Process emergent motion applications. Proofread published opinions and proposed opinions. Assist the Judge in evaluating cases filed with the court. Prepare draft opinions. Work with Justices on complex cases involving difficult issues of law. Track current developments in the law. The internships will take place in the summer. Ideally, the session will be 14 weeks (May 11 to August 14). Willing to break it up if needed into 7 weeks (May 11 to June 26 or June 29 to August 14). We are seeking 3-4 summer interns. The ideal candidates will be dynamic, articulate, organized, and eager to learn.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: NC General Statutes; NC Rules of Appellate Procedure; NC Supreme Court and Court of Appeals case law; NC Rules of Appellate and Civil Procedure; and some federal statutes and case law.
  • Skills in: Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to: conduct legal research and analysis; draft appellate opinions; and comprehend abstract legal concepts.
  • Must be currently enrolled at an ABA accredited law school.
  • Attach cover letter, résumé, unofficial transcripts, and writing sample.
