About The Position

The Superior Court is seeking entry-level attorneys for its Fellowship Program, designed for graduating law students and recent graduates. The program aims to provide hands-on experience in legal research and writing while assisting the Justices of the Superior Court. Law Fellows will engage in a variety of civil and criminal matters, working closely with experienced Research Attorneys. This position is a potential pathway to permanent Research Attorney roles, with a commitment to a term of at least one year, ending in August 2026.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited law school as of the start of the Fellowship.
  • Excellent legal writing and communication skills.
  • Excellent legal research and analytical skills, using both online and book resources.
  • High professional and ethical standards.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to courthouses in the Commonwealth as assigned.
  • Experience and knowledge in using personal computers, including Microsoft Word and legal research services such as Lexis and Westlaw.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, prioritize, and complete simultaneous assignments from various judges.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently while maintaining productivity and demonstrating good judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and otherwise complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a professional setting, including judges, managers, court staff, and other law fellows.
  • Genuine commitment to serving the full term of the Fellowship.

Nice To Haves

  • Substantial legal research and writing experience, including current or prior judicial clerkship or internship experience, particularly in the Massachusetts or federal court systems.
  • Membership in the Massachusetts Bar as of the start of the Fellowship, or currently applying for membership.
  • Familiarity with legal research resources beyond Westlaw and Lexis.
  • Demonstrated commitment to government or public service, particularly within the Judicial branch.

Responsibilities

  • Assist judges in matters before the court by attending motion hearings, trials, and other courtroom proceedings as needed.
  • Discuss legal issues with judges.
  • Perform careful and accurate legal research and analysis using both online and book resources.
  • Clearly and concisely convey results of research and analysis to judges, orally and in writing.
  • Prepare well-written and error-free legal research memoranda, bench memoranda, and draft decisions.
  • Complete assignments in a timely manner and within deadlines established by judges.
  • Perform related tasks as required.
