About The Position

To perform a variety of complex duties in support of police department operations and activities; to serve the community and the police department in a crime prevention role; to collect and process field evidence; to provide information and answer citizen inquiries at the front desk; and to perform a variety of duties relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Position possesses a specialized functional or technical expertise within the area of assignment and perform the most difficult and responsible type of duties assigned to the classes within this series including assignment to specialized operational or administrative programs. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.

Requirements

  • Two years of increasingly responsible non-sworn or sworn police program support experience.
  • High school diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
  • Completion of 80 hours of approved police department training in assigned program areas.
  • Possession of a valid State of California driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of complex duties in support of police department operations and activities.
  • Respond to crime scenes to collect, process, record and analyze evidence according to established procedures and standards.
  • Photograph crime scenes and traffic accidents; process and prepare photos and other visual medium for displays.
  • Record and process evidence for court presentations.
  • Conduct neighborhood watch meetings; establish contacts through door-to-door recruitment and surveys.
  • Speak publicly and make presentations; participate in area after school youth programs; provide mentoring to various youth.
  • Perform duties in support of neighborhood security programs and crime abatement.
  • Inspect residential and commercial properties and recommend security measures.
  • Coordinate and participate in police department activities with those of other departments, divisions and outside agencies.
  • Maintain vehicle fleet; assign and maintain records of equipment and vehicles.
  • Take reports of crimes where the situation is appropriate and within department policies and procedures.
  • Respond to general inquiries from the public at the front counter, on the phone or in the field.
  • Photograph and fingerprint individuals as needed; take needed information from the public.
  • Participate in a variety of special projects as directed; prepare, write, edit and distribute newsletters, pamphlets and other informational materials.
  • Prepare a variety of correspondence; maintain various files and records; order equipment and supplies.
  • Operate a computer to enter and retrieve data.
  • Provide in-service training to new Law Enforcement Technicians as needed.
  • Maintain a variety of records and files in assigned program area.
