The Opportunity: The sponsored recruit will attend a law enforcement academy that will introduce them to the fundamentals of law enforcement and prepare them to become a Police Officer with the University of Central Florida Police Department. The sponsored recruit will attend classroom lectures on subjects including criminal law, laws of arrest, traffic laws, juvenile law, principles of law enforcement, rules of evidence, rules of search and seizure, patrol theory and methods, and report writing. They will participate in demonstrations on arrest and control methods; physical conditioning and self-defense exercises; the care, procedures and use of firearms; and take examinations on each topic as well as a state exam.

Requirements

  • To be considered for sponsorship to the Florida Recruit Training Academy to obtain certification, an applicant must also meet the following requirements: must be at least 19 years of age, must be a U.S. citizen, must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and may not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement or have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Must pass a vigorous background investigation, to include psychological, physical, drug testing, and Computer Voice Stress Analysis.

  • Knowledge of local geography, University geography, and associated landmarks.

Responsibilities

  • Incumbents are expected to successfully complete the Law Enforcement Recruit Academy and transition to Police Officer or be terminated from the position.
  • Responsible for maintaining a passing grade in all courses in the training academy, including but not limited to: Law, Vehicle Operations, Communications, First Aid, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Patrol, Investigations, Investigating Offenses, Traffic Stops, Crash Investigations, Tactical Applications, Dart-Firing Stun Gun and State Exam Review.
  • Practical skills and field exercises include courtroom demeanor and testifying, report writing, identification, collection and preservation of evidence, interviewing and interrogation techniques, radio communications, patrol techniques, traffic direction, traffic crash investigations, police vehicle operation, defensive tactics, arrest techniques, firearms training, chemical agent application, CPR and first aid, fingerprinting and sobriety testing.
  • Responsible for keeping supervisor appraised of training progress and test scores.
  • When trainees are not actively engaged in academy courses, they will perform office related duties during normal business hours to include such things as copying, faxing, scanning, answering the phone, and assisting with other clerical duties.
  • Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared or undeclared emergency.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
