About The Position

The King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is one of the largest sheriff's departments in the country, with a commissioned staff of over 770. Deputies have the opportunity to serve in various communities, including unincorporated King County, contract city police departments, and transit police agencies. The department offers a range of unique assignments, from school and community-based positions to specialized roles in drug enforcement and bomb disposal. As a lateral hire, deputies receive a take-home patrol car shortly after being sworn in and qualifying with their weapon. Starting pay is based on individual experience and evaluated accordingly.

Requirements

  • Experience as a full-time commissioned police officer with at least 12 months of active patrol after completing all academy training.
  • Successful completion of probation as a commissioned officer with a city, county, or state police or sheriff's department.
  • Federal Law Enforcement experience may qualify, pending review from the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center (CJTC).
  • Less than a two-year break in service from a former police officer position.
  • Academy training that meets or exceeds the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center's standards (720 hours).
  • Out-of-state applicants must complete an 80-hour equivalency academy.
  • Verification of not meeting any of the Sheriff's Office Automatic Disqualifying Behaviors.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in community policing or community engagement initiatives.
  • Specialized training in areas such as drug enforcement, bomb disposal, or crisis intervention.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol a designated area of the county, assisting persons in trouble and rendering public safety services as needed.
  • Respond to calls of service, securing the scene, interviewing victims and witnesses, gathering evidence, and completing incident and arrest reports.
  • Investigate family disputes, reports of child maltreatment, and complaints about individuals with social or behavioral problems, taking necessary actions such as custody or referrals.
  • Complete administrative tasks, including report writing, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Testify in court, presenting facts and observations accurately and attesting to the chain-of-custody in evidence handling.
  • Participate in community policing activities and serve as a resource to the community.
  • Perform related work as required, including assignments in administrative, investigative, and special operations units.
