About The Position

The Latent Print Examiner position involves performing administrative, technical, and investigative work related to the identification, gathering, preservation, processing, and examination of fingerprint evidence. The role requires a thorough understanding of fingerprint classification and identification techniques, as well as the ability to provide expert testimony in court. The examiner will work under general supervision and is expected to maintain scientific standards while assisting other agencies with latent print processing.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an Associate's Degree in forensic science, biology, chemistry, criminal justice, or a closely related field.
  • Considerable experience in fingerprint classification and latent fingerprint identification work.
  • Thorough knowledge of fingerprint identification practices and the ACE-V scientific methodology.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to articulate clearly, both orally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Supplemental courses in fingerprint identification techniques.
  • Basic Fingerprint Classification Certificate.
  • Basic and Advanced Latent Fingerprint Comparison certificates.

Responsibilities

  • Examine friction ridge patterns for latent impressions of value for identification, inclusion, and/or exclusion.
  • Operate SAFIS/SPEX terminals to access local, state, and national AFIS databases to identify suspects/subjects.
  • Perform chemical and non-chemical forensic processes to retrieve latent impressions from evidence.
  • Maintain a detailed filing system for records of all casework and fingerprints.
  • Prepare analytical reports on analysis conducted and provide expert witness testimony in courts of law.
  • Instruct agency personnel on proper methods of recognition and collection of latent print evidence.
  • Assist other agencies with latent print processing and comparison.
  • Research information regarding identification of friction ridge patterns and stay updated on techniques and training.
