The Laser and Optical Engineer will be responsible for modeling and simulating optical systems and atmospheric beam propagation. This role supports design, analysis, lab and field testing, capability validation, troubleshooting, and product improvement within the Warfare Systems group of HII's Mission Technologies division. The engineer will translate system requirements into specifications, manage risks, and communicate effectively with stakeholders.

  • Translate between and among system requirements and optical component specifications
  • Lead and support subsystem trade studies that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints
  • Perform technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, evaluate alternatives including cost and risk, supportability and analyses
  • Translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications
  • Communicate task status with clarity and brevity
  • Identify, articulate, and manage risks
  • Manage team, customer, and supplier/partner relationships
  • Write reports
  • 9 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 7 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 4 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field
  • Experience performing laser system analysis with codes such as Zemax
  • Experience performing laser atmospheric propagation analysis with wave optics and scaling law and codes such as HELCOMES
  • Hands-on experience with lasers and optics
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated with strong work ethic
  • Experience working on government contracts
  • Technical and problem-solving intuition
  • Curiosity and ability to work comfortably with complexity
  • Ability to anticipate and mitigate technical programmatic implications of laser/optical system challenges

  • Must be able to obtain a SECRET security clearance
  • 7 years experience with a Masters or Ph.D in lasers/optics
  • Experience designing and testing high energy laser (HEL) laser and optical systems
  • Experience specifying, procuring, and testing lasers and optical system components and subsystems
  • Experience as a Laser Safety Officer
  • Experience building-out test capabilities
  • Experience working on Department of Defense contracts
  • Experience supporting Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
  • Active SECRET security clearance
