About The Position

This Large Animal Flex Assistant position will rotate through and support the staff and patients of all equine and livestock services. This will include equine surgery, ophthalmology, dentistry, podiatry, equine field service, equine sports medicine, equine rehab, equine medicine and critical care, and radiology. This position requires basic knowledge of various medical procedures, biosecurity surveillance, and proper equipment usage. This position will assist in case management on a day-to-day basis by providing support services such as stocking, cleaning and maintaining after use, and providing continuity of patient care with the guidance of the primary technician on shift. This position requires working holidays, overnights, and weekends as we are a 24/7/365 hospital. This position will be required to work one to two on- call shifts per week in addition to the regularly scheduled hours. At the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. This work unit exists to provide administration and direction of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and provide a support facility for service to the general public and referring veterinarians. Requirements

  • HS Diploma or GED plus one (1) year of experience caring for animals or providing animal handling duties OR HS Diploma or GED and a combination of related education and/or experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position equal to one (1) year.
  • One year (1) experience working in an equine or large animal veterinary hospital.
  • Ability to be flexible as this position may be working with several different Large Animal Services throughout the day depending on where the needs are.
  • A strong desire to learn and advance medical and technical knowledge base.
  • Ability to be compassionate and empathetic to clients in emotional situations.
  • Demonstrate experience working with a team which will include veterinary students.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care support including triage, assessment, treatments, monitoring, and safe animal restraint while working collaboratively with clinicians, residents, interns, and technicians.
  • Assist in implementing daily treatment plans by evaluating patient response to therapy, collecting diagnostic samples, and preparing for procedures.
  • Perform clinical support tasks including surgical preparation, IV fluid administration, blood gas collection, equipment operation and troubleshooting, procedure setup and breakdown, and cleaning and restocking clinical areas.
  • Support outpatient appointments including dentistry procedures, radiology exams, neurological exams, endoscopy, ultrasound, respiratory exams, and ophthalmology exams.
  • Follow and promote biosecurity protocols by appropriately cleaning, disinfecting, and storing equipment and participating in annual deep-cleaning procedures.
  • Maintain accurate invoicing by recording daily patient charges, entering exam requests, and updating patient care levels.
  • Monitor and replenish supplies and dry goods, collaborating with Central Supply for necessary orders.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
