About The Position

This position is accountable for the implementation of acceptable roadside development installations on established and new facilities and develops rest area contracts and maintenance work activities to help keep the facilities functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing to the traveling public. This position assists the Roadside Management Specialist in the design, construction, and maintenance of the roadway landscape features to ensure safety, compatibility, preservation, and aesthetics within the system. The incumbent provides input to operations and other bureaus regarding landscape, erosion control, and Context Sensitive Solution (CSS) issues. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Landscape Technician. Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS thirty months of engineering experience; OR Six years of engineering experience.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires a valid Illinois Pesticide Applicator's License.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Requires district-wide travel.
  • Requires 24/7 on call availability.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.

  • Ability to take direct charge of simple engineering projects within design standards.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures accomplishment of landscape projects according to specifications.
  • Provides timely and accurate reports on existing conditions of roadside development areas needed to help determine operation priorities.
  • Provides technical advice needed to develop roadside development projects and provides assistance and direction to the district’s contracted weed spray crews.
  • Establishes scopes, schedules, and budgets of rest area building repair contracts and ensures all contracts are completed according to specifications and in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for the coordination and implementation of the district Adopt-a-Highway Program.
  • Ensures safety through proper training and the implementation of proper subject matter principles and practices.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
