About The Position

Transportation Maintenance Specialist 1 – Landscape Maintenance Specialist Oregon Department of Transportation Delivery & Operations Division – Region 1 Maintenance Crew Portland. This position is open for recruitment and fully funded following the 2025 Special Legislative Session. The role: Do you want to use your skills to make a difference? Requirements

  • Six months experience operating heavy or light motorized equipment, using hand and power tools, performing minor servicing of equipment, and applying safety procedures.
  • Must possess a current, valid commercial driver's license A (CDL-A) with a tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, no 5th wheel restrictions and no manual transmission restrictions, OR have the ability to acquire a class A commercial learner permit within 60 days of hire and a CDL-A with a tanker endorsement and restrictions removed within six months of hire.
  • A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position.
  • This position requires a maximum 45 minute response time to 9637 SW 35th Dr, Portland, OR 97219 for emergency call-outs.
  • This position requires the final candidate obtain their Public Pesticide Applicator’s license within six months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • A current, valid commercial driver’s license A (CDL-A) is preferred.
  • Right of way, highway maintenance or landscape experience.
  • Experience operating light and heavy equipment.
  • Experience completing basic mechanical repairs on light and heavy vehicles or equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Replant, prune, thin or trim trees, shrubs and groundcover.
  • Operate a wide variety of motorized equipment and hand tools.
  • Maintain turf areas and repair, maintain and install irrigation systems.
  • Service and repair equipment, tools and motorized equipment.
  • Keep roads and facilities clear and safe in winter through snow removal, deicing and sanding.
  • Clear debris, build and repair fences, clear brush, mow grass and spray roadside vegetation.
  • Perform minor building maintenance including cleaning, landscaping, painting and light carpentry.
  • Repair guardrails and milepost markers.
  • Repair, replace and/or maintain specific roadway surfaces, sub-layers or shoulders on state highways and facilities.
