About The Position

The Landscape Construction Lead plays a vital role in supporting the construction, installation, and enhancement of the campus landscape. This position is responsible for a range of landscape construction activities, including hardscape installations, planting projects, site preparation, grading, drainage work, and outdoor lighting. The Landscape Construction Lead helps ensure that projects are completed according to plans and reflect the high standards of Art and Wellness Enterprises while contributing to a safe, functional, and visually exceptional campus environment. Working under the direction of Grounds Operations Management, the Landscape Construction Lead performs hands-on landscape construction work and supports special projects across the campus. This role collaborates with various campus partners to coordinate project work and ensure successful project delivery. In addition, the Landscape Construction Lead serves as a peer leader, guiding team members on assigned projects, reinforcing safety practices, and helping coordinate daily work to ensure quality craftsmanship, efficiency, and adherence to project plans. This position requires a strong understanding of landscape construction practices, attention to detail, and the ability to operate a wide variety of landscape tools and equipment. The ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team is essential.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in landscape construction or a related field, including hands-on experience with laser levels, hardscape installations, site preparation, grading, drainage, and familiarity with small construction equipment.
  • Experience interpreting landscape plans, installation drawings, and site layouts to support landscape construction and installation projects preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate or guide small teams during landscape installation or construction projects preferred.
  • Leadership experience is a plus.
  • Comfortable working outside in all different types of weather conditions and natural environments with rugged terrain.
  • Effective troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other basic computer applications as well as familiarity with basic project management tools and software.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to translate complex technical information for diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to understand and maintain the highest standards of confidentiality.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and innovative environment where change is constant.

Responsibilities

  • Peer Leadership
  • Support management in coordinating training and knowledge sharing for grounds operations staff and among team members from other departments working on construction and installation projects.
  • Reinforce safety practices on project sites, ensuring adherence to established safety guidelines and identifying and communicating safety concerns to management.
  • Guide team members in assigned areas, projects, or in the absence of management, modeling best practices in craftsmanship, safety, and guest service.
  • Mentor and support team members to strengthen technical expertise and understanding of construction methods, materials, and installation activities, including oversight of critical projects and assisting management in delegating tasks.
  • Support management with administrative functions, including procuring tools and supplies, sharing or presenting at team meetings, and coordinating schedules and work assignments.
  • Trains team members and provide guidance on work methods associated with landscape construction and special projects.
  • Help coordinate daily project work, including task assignments, start times, and workflow sequencing to support efficient completion of assigned work.
  • Ensure team members working on assigned projects have the appropriate tools, materials, and equipment needed to perform their work safely and effectively.
  • Landscape Construction Operations
  • Partner with leadership to support the implementation of strategic objectives for landscape construction and special projects within the grounds department.
  • Support efforts to build a collaborative team environment that empowers team members and promotes a culture of efficiency and safety.
  • Contribute to department planning efforts related to landscape construction and project work that balance safety, appearance, and guest and team member satisfaction.
  • Support the introduction and implementation of new processes and tools to improve efficiency, quality of work, and decrease safety risks.
  • Maintain accurate records for project work, including budget tracking and planning, materials tracking, documentation, and written specifications related to landscape construction and installation activities.
  • Support project cost planning through preparation of material lists and estimates as well as responsible use of project resources.
  • Develop communication memos, emails, and other documentation to support project coordination and workflow.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors performing landscape-related work on property and assists in monitoring project progress and quality of work.
  • Promote a culture of safety in the workplace and supports safety initiatives that reduce health and safety risks for team members, guests, and vendors.
  • Collaborate with grounds operations teams to ensure successful transition of newly installed landscapes into long-term maintenance programs.
  • Engage in landscape maintenance and horticultural tasks as needed to support departmental priorities and operational needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
