About The Position

This position is with the National Mall and Memorial Parks located in Washington, D.C.. Open to the first 60 applicants or until 12/09/2025 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration. The major duties of the Landscape Architect position include, but are not limited to, the following: Assists with the identification, research, planning, treatment, and preservation maintenance of conventional cultural landscapes. In concert with the supervisor or higher graded specialist, performs landscape architectural duties associated with review, design, treatment, and monitoring of cultural landscapes. Develops and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, and the public. Attends management and professional conferences and other events for the purposes of exchanging information. Identifies research needs and suitable research designs and conducts routine documentary research and field investigation. Conducts on-site investigations of project sites to determine the feasibility of proposed projects, including the development of design alternatives and subsequent analysis to ensure the project is consistent with NPS policies, guidelines, and standards and environmental and cultural compliance laws and regulations. In cooperation with higher-graded specialist, coordinates cultural landscape research projects related to the identification, documentation, analysis and evaluation, and treatment; conducts research involving historical documents, photographs, maps and drawings, and related items to develop knowledge of and data about specific cultural landscapes, such as period design concepts, land use patterns, cultural traditions, and historic plant materials. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Complete the initial online assessment and USAHire Assessment, if required.

  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

  • Landscape Architect- 0807 Series Basic Requirements: Education: A degree in landscape architecture or landscape design. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: For each year short of graduation, the applicant must have had 1 year of experience under professional leadership and guidance of such character and diversity as to be a satisfactory substitute for the required education. This experience must have included original landscape design.
  • To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Experience at this level must include all of the following prepare drawings and presentation documents for landscape concept and schematic design. Utilize AutoCAD program to produce design documents including layout plan, planting plan, grading plan, and construction details. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 2 years of progressively higher- level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts.
  • To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Experience at this level must include all of the following: prepare drawings and presentation documents for landscape concept and schematic design; utilize AutoCAD program to produce design documents including layout plan, planting plan, grading plan, and construction details; prepare or edit construction specifications. prepare construction cost estimate-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts.
