About The Position

This is a full-time, FLSA non-exempt position with Carson City Public Works located in Carson City, Nevada. Under immediate supervision, provides a variety of landfill maintenance and operations duties required for efficient and effective service to landfill customers and the City. Employees may choose between the following: Employer-Paid PERS Retirement:$26.9797 - $37.7717 hourly / $56,117.88 - $78,565.24 annually Employee/Employer-Paid PERS Retirement: $32.5480 - $45.5671 hourly / $67,699.84 - $94,779.62 annually To learn more about the Nevada Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), click here. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; AND two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
  • ValidClass A driver's license with tanker endorsement within 18 months of hire
  • Must take pre-employment physical examination and Respiratory Fit test
  • Policies and procedures of the landfill unit.
  • Use of specified computer applications involving word processing, data entry and/or standard report generation.
  • Business arithmetic.
  • Safety policies and practices.
  • Record keeping principles and practices.
  • Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
  • Maintaining accurate financial records and preparing accurate and timely reports.
  • Reading, interpreting and explaining rules, policies and procedures.
  • Operation and maintenance of heavy equipment that ensures a safe and effective working environment.
  • Performing basic mathematical calculations.
  • Performing assigned duties in a safe manner.
  • Following oral and written instructions.
  • Performing a variety of construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
  • Dealing successfully with City staff at various levels, the public, in person and over the telephone.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with staff, coworkers, contractors and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy equipment necessary for landfill operations; maintains equipment in a clean and functional operating condition.
  • Operates water truck to perform dust control and fire suppression activities as required.
  • Operates gatehouse; utilizes automated scale system; calculates and collects amount due for waste loads.
  • Directs vehicle traffic at the landfill.
  • Maintains landfill shop, catch fences, and buildings.
  • Performs snow removal as required.
  • Performs basic clean-up of site and facilities as required.
  • Enters and retrieves data and prepares reports using a computer; reviews such reports for accuracy and makes corrections as required; operates standard office equipment.
  • Observes safe working practices, including maintaining work areas in a safe condition.
  • Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as a member of a work team.
  • Keeps basic records of work performed, time sheets, etc.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and City staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
