About The Position

GENERAL PURPOSE In a team environment or while working independently, perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the removal and transfer of solid waste in the City landfill while operating a variety of equipment and trucks. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Regular attendance with the ability to work in an occupied environment, including other employees, citizens, and large vehicles. Operates a variety of machinery to move and transfer solid waste, refuse and discarded materials; operates specialized vehicles for collection and emptying of trash containers. Maintains and cleans equipment and reports mechanical defects and vehicle maintenance needs. Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries. Monitors work environment for safety and continually screens all materials at the landfill in order to identify hazardous and prohibited waste. Supports the relationship between the Town of Pecos City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff and maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information. May be required to respond after hours, including holidays and weekend, in the event of a departmental or City-wide emergency. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must maintain a Class A Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL). MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Valid Texas Class B Driver's License is required. DRIVER I: Zero to Two (0-2) years of experience in solid waste, specifically garbage truck operation, is preferred. DRIVER II: Two to Four (2-4) years of experience in solid waste PLUS one of the following: OSHA 10 Hour Certificate or TCEQ approved MSW Rules and Regulations Course. DRIVER III: Four+ years of experience in solid waste PLUS two of the following: OSHA 10 Hour Certificate, TCEQ approved MSW Rules and Regulations Course, or TCEQ approved MSW Waste Screening Course. DRIVER IV: Four+ years of experience in solid waste PLUS TCEQ Class B MSW Operator Certificate. Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS Knowledge General knowledge of light to heavy equipment operating principles. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to light to heavy equipment operations. Basic working knowledge of the methods of sanitation within the department. Skills General knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and capabilities of heavy power-driven equipment. Excellent skills in safety policies, standards, and safe driving practices in public streets. Exercises appropriate judgment in establishing priorities. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Assessing the safety of a work site is imperative. Abilities Ability to share a heavy workload to maintain team balance, acquire skills in all equipment and procedures to become a more valuable crew member. Help train and orient new workers. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other departments, and the public. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Motorized vehicles and equipment, including front loading and side loading garbage truck, and other commercial vehicles, as required. Mobile radio, email, fax machine, and various phone types. While standing/walking primarily in a landfill, the employee must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, and lift/carry up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee typically encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Work is generally performed outside, exposed to extreme heat in summer and cold in winter, and in all weather conditions. The employee typically is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is also occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and may work in environments that expose them to risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic smells, chemicals, and fumes. The work environment is typically loud.

Requirements
