About The Position

Directs traffic at solid waste facilities. Monitors incoming waste for hazardous materials.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license by the State of Utah at the time of hire.
  • Must obtain flagging certification within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position.
  • Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing.
  • May be subject to post accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.
  • Knowledge of: Directing traffic/flagging

  • Using a two-way radio
  • Skills and Abilities to: Communicate effectively
  • Direct traffic efficiently and safely
  • Follow written and verbal instructions
  • Perform manual labor in extreme weather conditions
  • This position requires driving and sitting in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time; a full range of motion in the shoulders, arms, hands, wrists, legs, and feet; and manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Requires bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 60 pounds on an intermittent basis.
  • Work is performed outdoors with exposure to all elements.
  • Constant exposure to traffic hazards, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, fumes, grease, and unsanitary conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference will be given for those with at least one (1) year of closely related experience, such as directing traffic, flagging, or working in or around construction sites, landfills, recycling facilities, or compost operations.

Responsibilities

  • Directs vehicles to various unloading areas at solid waste facilities.
  • Enforces agency safety requirements and procedures; takes appropriate action.
  • Inspects vehicles for hazardous waste material in coordination with primary inspection staff.
  • Communicates with the public regarding services.
  • Informs the public where to properly unload solid, recyclable, and household hazardous waste material.
  • Picks up litter and/or supervises litter control.
  • Prepares and applies alternative daily cover as needed.
  • Completes daily work reports and logs.
  • May Operate basic equipment as needed.
